MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

It is with much satisfaction that the Municipality of Evdilos presents the Tourist Guide of the region to visitors, holidaymakers, tourists and to Ikarians worldwide. This guide, a model itself, hopefully functional and practical, records the main features of our region which together with the municipalities of Agios Kirikos and Raches make up the multifaceted historical, cultural, political and economic identity of Ikaria.

With this Guide, the Municipal Authority, the city of Evdilos and the villages of our region welcome you with feelings of joy and friendship to our 'ִחלן' (Municipality) and to our island, and invite you to become better acquainted with our land. Young people born of Ikarian parents visiting the land of their ancestors for the first time, will find facts in this Guide about the island that are particularly useful and will get a closer look at places, villages,beaches, about which they may have only heard of from their own families or read about in books on history and mythology.

The Municipality of Evdilos with its picturesque city and port face the boundless deep blue north Aegean Sea, while the communities (Karavostamo, Arethousa, Frantato, Daphne) with their settlements climb from the shore to the mountain range of Pramnos (Atheras altitude 1042 m.) and from there they descend south to the sea on the other side of Ikaria to Manganitis. The villages- with their traditional products (wine, cottage cheese, bread, honey, wild goat, fruit and vegetables),with their marriage ceremonies, churches, old homes and forests, as well as the coastal zones -with their picturesque beaches, their worthwhile sights, hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, shops and bars,the Museum of Kampos,are available to all and await you to visit and get to know our simple and honest hospitality.

This Guide is part of a broader program aiming towards a balanced and moderate development of the Municipality of Evdilos - a programme elaborated upon by the Municipal Authority with the assistance of Professor Dion. Mavrogiannis (former Dean of the Demokrition University of Thrace) and which is in the stages of being materialised. It is a community development program on tourism and trade based on the utilization of the natural resources and cultural identity of our region as well as on the productive strength and economic needs of our local society.
